A train derailment in north-eastern Taiwan on Sunday killed at least 17 people and injured 126, government authorities said.

The accident took place on Sunday afternoon in Yilan County near the coast, with several carriages overturned on a railway popular among tourists, report Reuters, BBC.

Photographs from the scene show several train carriages lying on their side off the railway tracks.

Taiwan's Central News Agency report 30 others may still be trapped until Sunday evening.

The train, reportedly a high-speed Puyuma Express 6432 service, was travelling between Taipei and the eastern coastal county of Taitung with 310 passengers onboard.

It is believed to have come off the tracks close to Xinma station, close to the town of Su'ao about 70km (43 miles) from Taipei.

Taiwan’s central government said that rescue services were at the scene and that the premier had been notified and was highly concerned over the safety of the travellers.
