At least seven people were killed and more than ten others injured in a road accident in the western Indian state of Rajasthan Wednesday, police said.

"The accident occurred when a speeding car ploughed into a group of pilgrims in the state's Dhaulpur area this morning after the driver lost control of the vehicle," an official said.

While seven pilgrims died on the spot after being run over by the car, those injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital by local residents.

"The death toll may rise later in the day as the condition of some of the injured are said to be serious," the official said.

Eye-witnesses told cops that the car was travelling at high speed and the driver failed to apply brakes when he suddenly saw a group of pilgrims on the road.

This is the third accident in the state in the past month.

Last week, over 15 students were injured when their school bus overturned near Jhalawar Road on national highway number 27.

Earlier this month, some 24 students were injured in another school bus accident in the state's Sikar district.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
