Saudi to respond to any economic sanctions

Saudi Arabia would retaliate to possible economic sanctions taken by other states over the case of Jamal Khashoggi.

The state news agency SPA gave the information in a report quoting an official source, reports Reuters.

The kingdom will respond to any measure against it with bigger measures, the source said, adding: “The Saudi economy has vital and influential roles for the global economy.”

Saudi Arabia has been under pressure since Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Riyadh and a US resident, disappeared on October 2 after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Another Reuters report said, US President Donald Trump said on Saturday the United States would be “punishing” itself by halting military sales to Saudi Arabia even if it is proven that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the country’s consulate in Istanbul.

“I actually think we’d be punishing ourselves if we did that,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

“There are other things we can do that are very, very powerful, very strong and we’ll do them,” he added, without saying what those measures might be.
