Flyover collapses in Kolkata, five dead and several trapped

Five people died as flyover collapsed following heavy rains in Kolkata, the capital of India's West Bengal state, on Tuesday.

Authorities said several people are feared trapped under the debris.

The death toll is likely to go up as several vehicles were passing under and over the bridge when it collapsed, reports indiatvnews.com.

Sources said, the Majerhat flyover on busy Diamond Harbour Road in Kolkata reportedly collapsed around 4.45 pm on Tuesday.

Images from TV channels showed many vehicles buried under the rubble.

Disaster team and fire fighters reached the spot and local people were also assisting in rescue operations.

Injured were transported to nearby hospitals.

The West Bengal government has reportedly sought Indian Army's help in rescue operations.

According to ground reports, at least one mini bus and several cars were crushed under the collapsed bridge.

The flyover has collapsed in two pieces only hours before office rush.

On March 31, 2016, an under construction flyover in city’s Burrabazar collapsed, killing 27 people.
