US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has resigned from her role, the latest departure from US President Donald Trump's national security circle,

According to multiple reports, US President Trump accepted Haley's resignation on Tuesday. But it was unclear when she would depart.

CNN and The New York Times also published reports on her resignation.

Haley, the former Republican governor of South Carolina, joined the administration in 2017 just four days after Trump officially took office.

She had reportedly discussed leaving her position last week with Trump at the White House.

Haley walked past reporters in the White House on Tuesday morning but did not comment.

She will meet with Trump in the Oval Office at 10:30 a.m., according to White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
