Pakistan summoned US ambassador in Islamabad late Monday and lodged protest over US President Donald Trump's tweet in which he doubted Pakistan's role against terrorism, according to local reports.

US Ambassador to Pakistan David Hale was called to the Foreign Ministry after high level consultations between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and civil and military leaders.

Trump earlier twitted that "The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools."

Trump further wrote that "They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!"

Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua summoned the US ambassador and sought clarification about Trump's remarks, reports Xinhua news agency.

She told the US envoy that Pakistan has taken action against all militants' groups without any discrimination and regretted that her country's sacrifices are being ignored.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif and opposition leaders joined hands to come up with angry reaction to Trump's tweet and said the US president is shifting blame of the US failure in Afghanistan to Pakistan.
