The first Mexican indigenous presidential candidate Maria de Jesus Patricio has been injured and one person killed in a road crash.

The accident occurred when a van in which Patricio was travelling with 10 other people went off a highway in western Baja California State, The National Indigenous Council said in a brief statement.

An unidentified woman was killed and council member Francisco Grado was in serious condition. Another council member Lucero Islava also had injuries, the statement said, but gave no details.

A Reuters report says quoting a state emergency services official that Patricio suffered a fractured forearm in the accident.

Patricio, a Nahua indigenous healer from Jalisco state is popularly known as ‘Marichuy’. She has been running as an independent candidate seeking to get a place on the July 1 presidential ballot, reports the Associated Press.
