At least 20 people were killed and seven others hospitalised after an overloaded boat capsized in Nigeria's northern state of Kano Tuesday evening, local authorities said Wednesday.
"The boat was ferrying about 50 people with some loads. It capsized because of overloading. Most of the passengers were Islamiyyah students," the office of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said in a statement on the "state tragedy."
More casualties are expected, as rescuers search for more victims, reports Xinhua citing the statement.
Boat accidents are common in Nigeria due to overloading and faulty operation.
