Several thousands of apparel workers have begun a fast-unto-death strike in front of the Shromo Bhaban in the capital on Sunday, demanding their unpaid salary for four months.
A total of nearly 5,000 workers of Sinha Garments, located in Narayanganj’s Kanchpur area which is owned by Opex Group, started the sit-in demanding their unpaid salary for the months from June to September this year, Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, President of Bangladesh Textile Garments Workers Federation, told The Financial Express.
Some 12,500 apparel workers are passing a tough time as the garment authorities are not providing their due wages, he pointed out.
Until the filing of the report at around 12noon, the garment workers are still staging the protest in the area.
Mahbubur said, “They will continue their agitation until their demand is met.”
However, the federation’s president said a meeting is scheduled to be held at 3:00pm today (Sunday) at the Ministry of Labour to resolve the matter.
