Workers of foreign-owned RMG factory seek PM’s intervention to get arrears

Employees and workers of a foreign-owned garment factory at Savar EPZ on Tuesday sought the intervention by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to get their arrears for one year.

The RMG workers under the banner 'National Garments Workers’ Federation (NGWF)' came up with the appeal at a press conference at the National Press Club in the city on Tuesday.

“So, I am seeking the intervention by the Prime Minister to get our arrears and allowance for last one year of the apparel factory,” the NGWF President Amirul Haque Amin said while reading out a written statement at the press conference.

On April 17, 2020, A One BD Limited, an Italian apparel factory at Savar EPZ, shut down its factory without paying the salaries and allowances of about 1,100 workers without issuing any prior notice.

The NGWF president also said the sudden closure of the factory without any notice amounts to misconduct under the Bangladesh Labour Act.

The NGWF officially brought up the issue to Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA), Department of Factories and Establishment and all concerned organisations but no one took any action to this end, he alleged.

If the demand is unmet, a ‘march programme’ towards the Prime Minister's Office will be organised on January 18, Amin added.
