The workers of eight state-owned jute mills in Khulna division have enforced a half day strike to press home their 11-point demands.
The strike began around 9:00am on Sunday and will continue till 12:00pm.
The workers of the eight jute mills -- Crescent Jute Mills, Platinum Jute Mills, Khalispur Jute Mills, Star Jute Mills, Alim Jute Mills, Eastern Jute Mills, Jashore Jute Mills and Carpeting Jute Mills -- staged demonstrations on the mill premises, reports UNB.
Major demands of the workers include payment of due wages, implementation of wage commission and job regularisation, said Sarder Abu Hanif, president of Alim Jute Mill Workers Union.
The workers this morning blocked Khulna-Jashore highway at Natun Rasta intersection, Atrai Industrial area and in front of Jashore Jute Mill, halting vehicular movement on the highway.
The agitated workers are poised to declare new programme on May 4 if their demands are not fulfilled. They have also decided to boycott voting in the upcoming Khulna City Polls.
