The Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) on Monday fixed maximum wholesale and retail prices of six key essentials ahead of the holy month of Ramadan aiming to protect the interests of the consumers.
Essentials such as sugar, onion, chickpea, soybean oil, date and lentil prices have been fixed, DAM Director General Mohammad Yusuf said this at a press briefing.
However, monitoring teams of the commerce ministry will scrutinise the market regularly to ensure that traders comply with the fixed price, he said.
The maximum wholesale price of sugar has been fixed at Tk 63, retail price at Tk 68 while onion prices have been fixed at Tk 35 and Tk 40 respectively.
MRP of coarse lentil has been fixed at 69 per kg, regular date at Tk 100 per kg, medium quality date at Tk 250 a kg, chickpea at Tk 67 a kg and soybean oil at Tk 139 per litre, according to the DAM briefing.
The price at wholesale and retail has been fixed considering annual demand, demand during Ramadan, total imports, local production, availability and other issues of such products, said DAM.
DAM said there is enough supply of the products thanks to handsome imports and good local production of few essentials like onions.
