Prices of vegetables and fishes increased further while the prices of broiler chicken saw a decline this week, compared to the pre-Eid period.
Sunday (August 26) was the first working day after the three-day Eid holidays followed by the weekend.
City kitchen markets, however, started to get its normal look on Thursday as holidaymakers returned to the capital in a large number in the last few days.
Most of the vendors and traders reopened their shops, except the beef traders.
Prices of vegetables, including papaya, snake gourds, pointed gourds, ridge gourds, sponge gourds, eddo, okra and bitter gourds increased by Tk 5-Tk 10 a kg. They are selling at between Tk 40-Tk 70 a kg.
All kinds of leafy vegetables, ash gourds and bottle gourds registered a price hike of Tk 3 to Tk10 per bunch or a piece.
Akramul Hoque, a wholesaler at Rayerbazar-Beribadh area, told the FE that prices of the vegetables surged amid supply crunch as many traders in the some districts were yet to restart their business after Eid.
He expressed the hope that seasonal veggie prices will decline within a few days with the rise in supply.
However, transactions in the kitchen markets increased significantly in the city's wholesale markets like Karwanbazar, Shaymbazar, Jatrabari, Maulavibazar on Thursday, traders said.
Visiting the Karwanbazar market, this correspondent saw a large number of customers and traders.
"Transactions increased notably as 100 vegetable-laden trucks came to the market today (Thursday) while the number was less than 10 on Sunday," said Secretary of Uttar Karwan Bazar Babsayee Janakalyan Samity Jamal Uddin Babul.
Supply of both riverine and cultured fish increased significantly on Thursday, compared to that on Saturday and Sunday last.
Prices of fishes witnessed a hike of Tk 20-Tk 60 a kg, compared to the pre-Eid day.
Prices of cultured rui, tilapia and pangas increased by Tk 20 a kg. On the other hand, riverine fish prices (except hilsa) increased further by Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg.
Broiler chicken prices have declined by Tk 10 in a week, now selling at Tk 125-Tk 135 a kg.
Prices of onion and ginger witnessed a slight decline.
Beef shops will remain shut for the next one week as refrigerators of city dwellers are now full of meat of sacrificial animals, said traders.
