Vegetable prices shot up last week, upsetting the commoners who are already battered by the spiralling cost of commodities like rice, edible oil, fish, meat, egg, lentil and sugar.
Cauliflower, cabbage, brinjal, country bean and radish prices increased by Tk 5.0-15 a kilogram or piece on Thursday, according to city vendors.
Brinjal rise in price to Tk 60-80 a kg, and cauliflower and cabbage to Tk 40-60 per piece at retail level on the day depending on size and quality.
Country bean price, which declined to Tk 30-40 a kg in January rose to Tk 50-70.
Only tomato remained static at Tk 40-50 a kg depending on variety and quality, according to kitchen market retailers and roaming vendors in Dhaka city.
All kinds of leafy vegetables also witnessed a hike of Tk 2.0-5.0 a bunch at wholesale level, according to Johurul Islam, a vendor at Dhanmondi-15 neighbourhood.
He said brinjal supply has fallen at Karwanbazar wholesale market in the past seven days as per five kilo of long brinjal was selling at Tk 260-270 now.
Rayerbazar-based trader Labib Hasan said supply of winter vegetables, especially cauliflower, cabbage, brinjal and bean, has declined from hubs like Mymensingh, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Bogura and Pabna.
Many farmers have started preparing croplands for rice and maize farming this Boro season, he added.
Mr Hasan said supply from Cumilla, Dhaka and Jashore regions is now meeting the major demand.
Early-grown summer veggies like pointed gourd, ridge, sponge, snake gourd, eddo, colocasia stems and bitter gourds were available but at as high as Tk 60-70 a kg.
Meanwhile, edible oil prices have risen by Tk 5.0-8.0 a litre in the last 10 as loose soybean was retailing at Tk 150-155, branded one at Tk 163-168, five-litre jar at Tk 780-800 and loose palm oil at Tk 138-146 a litre.
