Uber Bangladesh Ltd (UBL) has been appointed as the lead generation service for its ride-sharing operations in the country as Dutch firm Rasier Operations BV left the charge in August.

The transfer of the charge to the app-based ride-hailing giant's operations in Bangladesh took effect from September 01, according to company sources.

UBL will act as a limited risk distributor for Uber global operations, it said in a letter to the revenue board informing the change of its operating model.

Replying to a query, Uber spokesperson said the change has been made to support the long-term growth and expansion of its business in Bangladesh.

The UBL is authorised to provide lead generation service to driver-partners on Uber platform, connecting them to riders looking to book a trip.

Earlier, Rasier, a company incorporated in the Netherlands, was providing the same service here.

Uber started life in Bangladesh in November 2016 with car service in Dhaka and launched motorcycle service within one year, making the country its one of the most important markets.

Gradually, the company has expanded its operations across the country.

Until last August, Uber services were expanded to 20 cities across all eight divisions.

The idea for Uber was born in Paris in 2008, but the tech-based firm was registered in the USA and it began formal journey in 2010.

According to a survey by the company, Uber alone contributed approximately Tk 45 billion to Bangladesh's economy in 2021.

The survey showed Uber has been thriving here as users consider its service safe, comfortable, time-saving and a convenient alternative to the prevailing public transport system.

The findings of the survey styled 'Bangladesh Economic Impact Report 2021' done by Public First, a UK-based policy research firm, was unveiled earlier this month.

Uber's contribution to Bangladesh includes the impact of earnings of Uber-facilitated driver-partners, and the wider indirect and induced multiplier effect created throughout its wider supply chain.

Its driver-partners earned an additional Tk 522 million annually in income through Uber, or an average of 26 per cent more than their next best alternative, revealed the study.
