The Dhaka (West) VAT zone has unearthed VAT evasion worth Tk 5.4 million (54 lakh) by two entities-a sweets shop and a community centre--- through an intensive inspection.
The VAT office filed cases against the two, located in the city's Mohammadpur area, said a statement.
VAT officers confiscated commercial documents of the White Palace Convention Hall under Sector 26 and detected concealment of information on sales worth Tk 22.8 million.
The VAT officials thus detected VAT evasion worth Tk 3.4 million by the community centre.
On the other hand, the team detected Tk 2.0 million VAT evasion by the sweets shop through concealment of information on sales worth Tk 14.9 million.
Assistant commissioner of Dhaka west zone Dildar Hossain led the team during the inspection.
Both the companies collected VAT from consumers but did not deposit with the public exchequer.
According to the VAT Law, Section 37, it is a punishable offence to evade VAT in such a way.
