Tomato, brinjal and cauliflower prices go up

Prices of tomato, brinjals, and cauliflower went up in Dhaka city’s kitchen markets on Sunday, adding to common people's woes.

However, prices of broiler chicken, layer chicken, red eggs, and Pakistani and Sonali chickens remained static.

Broiler chicken was selling at Tk 165-Tk 166 per kg at the wholesale level on Sunday, Rasel (single name), a salesman at New Bismillah Broiler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, told The Financial Express (FE).

Layer chicken was selling at Tk 220 a kg at the wholesale level, he said adding that the price of the red egg was Tk 100 a dozen.

He was retailing red eggs at Tk 105-Tk 100 per dozen, he stated.

The retail price of broiler chicken was reported to be Tk 162-Tk 168 a kg, according to the Department of Agriculture Marketing (DAM).

A dozen of red eggs were selling at Tk 33-Tk 35, it said adding that the price of local lentils was Tk 109-Tk 115 a kg.

Jubayer Hossain, a wholesaler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, told The FE that the price of local lentils and imported lentils remained at the same price level maintaining the previous hike.

Local lentils were retailing by him at Tk 115 per kg on Sunday, while imported ones were selling at Tk 95-Tk 100 a kg at the retail level, he said.

Mentioning that the market has been very volatile recently, Jubayer said prices of flour, edible oil, sugar, and imported lentil remained high.

Akash (single name), a vendor at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, said newly-harvested onions were selling at Tk 36-Tk 37 per kg and imported Indian onions at Tk 45-Tk 46 per kg at the wholesale level.

Imported ginger was selling at Tk 108 a kg at the wholesale level, he added.

Flour, edible oil and sugar witnessed no remarkable change, meaning that the previous higher level of prices continued on Sunday.

This correspondent saw that prices of red tomato, brinjals, and cauliflower saw a hike by Tk 5.0.

The prices of pumpkins, bitter gourd, pointed gourd, newly harvested potatoes, and green chili remained steady in the past few days.

A vegetable vendor, Faruk (single name) claimed that prices of most vegetables remained unchanged on Sunday

Cauliflowers and beans were wholesaling at Tk 25-Tk 30 and Tk 30 respectively on Sunday, which were Tk 20-Tk 25 and Tk 25 respectively a day before, he said.

Newly-harvested diamond varieties of potatoes were selling at Tk 15-Tk 16 a kg at the wholesale level, he added.

At the wholesale level, green chili was selling at Tk 30-Tk 35 per kg and radish at Tk 18-Tk 20 per kg, Faruk added.
