Following a request from the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), three sugar manufacturers and refiners have started selling the commodity at Tk 95 per kilogramme (kg) at some crowded and important places in the capital.
Deshbondhu Group, City Group and Meghna Group started selling sugar on Wednesday at the retail level to keep stable the price of the essential item, according to BSS.
Trucks carrying sugar from these private manufacturers sold sugar in the capital's Motijheel, Zero Point, Bangladesh Secretariat, New Market, Azimpur, Kawranbazar and some other important places on Wednesday.
DNCRP’s Director General AHM Safiquzzaman said that there are certain stages for selling sugar from the mill gates to the retail level for which there remains a possibility of manipulation.
"Considering the matter, we've requested these industrial groups to sell sugar from trucks. Following such request, they have started selling sugar from today (Wednesday)," he added.
Shafiquzzaman said that common people were found buying sugar from the trucks during a visit to oversee the selling operations of sugar in some parts of the capital.
"Such operation will continue until the market becomes stable," he added.
Meanwhile, the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) started selling sugar across the country at Tk 55 per kg from Monday. The directorate also held a meeting with the concerned stakeholders and the businessmen on that day to keep stable the market of sugar.
Representatives from the sugar manufacturers and mill owners assured the government in that meeting that they would boost the supply of sugar in the market which would reduce the supply shortage to a big extent.
As part of that initiative, these three industries started selling sugar on Wednesday.
