Amid soaring prices of essential items, the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will operate a sales drive across the country in two phases.
The first phase will begin in the second week of next month (March), followed by the second phase just 2-3 days before starting the holy month of Ramadan.
The decision was taken at a meeting on TCB plans and strategy to keep prices of essentials stable during the upcoming Ramadan.
Senior officials and state agencies were present at the meeting at the commerce ministry on Tuesday.
The meeting decided to sell the key essential items like edible oil, onion, sugar, gram, date and lentil at subsidised rates to around 10 million families, said a meeting source.
A family would be able to buy a maximum of two kgs of sugar, two kgs of lentils, two litres of soybean oil and one Kg of gram from the TCB sales points.
This year, the sales will be coordinated in the district and Upzilla levels by the local administrations, including Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Upazilla Nirbahi Officers (UNOs), following the list of beneficiaries.
Currently, the TCB is operating its truck-sales throughout the year to keep the prices within the buying capacity of common people. Soybean oil is being sold at Tk 110 per litre, sugar at Tk 55 per kg, lentil at Tk 65 per kg and onion at Tk 30 per kg.
