Solar power not viable for Bangladesh: Nasrul

The state minister for power and energy has said that solar power is not a viable solution for Bangladesh in the present context considering the scarcity of land.

Nasrul Hamid said this speaking at a discussion titled ‘Prospect of renewable energy in Bangladesh’, held at the National Press Club.

Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) organised the programme in Dhaka on Monday.

Bangladesh, according to him, cannot afford such technology due to higher cost, acute population density and loss of agricultural land despite the fact that such technology is getting popular in developed countries.

He said, “Considering various aspects in Bangladesh including density of population and agricultural land, solar power is not feasible in Bangladesh like that in Saudia Arabia or UAE.”

The state minister also said the country needs to continue installing power plants with proven technologies across the world.

“Bangladesh cannot turn out to be a guinea pig to the cause of foreigners’ research,” he said.
