Shrimp production witnessed a dip from 2014-2015 fiscal year to 2016-2017 fiscal (FY15 to FY17) in the country, according to official data.
As per data of the Department of Fisheries (DOF), some 75,274 tonnes of shrimp were produced in FY15 on 216,468 hectares of land while the shrimp production in FY17 stood at 68,272 tonnes on 205,654 hectares of land.
In FY14, some 71,430 tonnes of shrimp were produced on 215,305 hectares of land, the data added.
The biggest shrimp hub of the country is in south-west region such as Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira because of the abundance of saline water in those regions and shrimp post larvae (fry) in the Sundarbans mangrove forest.
Among the coastal districts, the highest production of Bagda (tiger shrimp) was observed in Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and Cox`s Bazar.
