RMG female workers deprived of rights: Report

Many Readymade Garment (RMG) female workers are deprived of their lawful rights including appointment letter, identify card, pay slip, service book and attendance card, according to a watch report.

The report said that the rate of issuance of attendance card to the workers by their employers is very high—98.7 per cent, where non-implementation status for providing service book is 51.3 per cent.

A little less than one third (31.3 per cent) respondents have no appointment letter, almost same proportion of 32 per cent don’t get pay slip from employer, a quarter (24.7 per cent) don’t have identify card, it revealed on Monday.

The report titled “State of Rights Implementation for Women Ready Made Garment Workers”  conducted by Karmojibi Nari, Care Bangladesh with funding from Austrian Development Cooperation disclosed at a programme held in a city hotel.

Hameeda Hossain convener of Workers Safety Forum was present as the chief guest.

The study conducted on 150 garment workers in Gazipur and Dhaka.

The report aims to unveil the state of women garment workers’ rights implementation at RMG workplaces, said Jakir Hossain, professor of Rajshahi University, while presenting the study findings.

In particular, the report brings into light the present status of application of labour law provisions for women workers in the areas of employment contract; working hour, rest and leave, work environment; welfare and social protection and workplace representation.
