Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has requested the NBR to simplify business procedures for seizing the new opportunities created for the readymade garment sector.
"Business procedures including customs and bonds should be eased more in line with the emerging situations in order to seize new opportunities created for the industry," said a BGMEA statement, quoting its president Faruque Hassan.
The RMG industry has been able to back on track after addressing mountainous challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic and the timely support of the government played a crucial role in the strong comeback, he said while speaking in a meeting with Hossain Ahmed, NBR Member (Customs Export, Bond and IT), on Thursday.
BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim, former First Vice Presidents S M Abu Tayeb and Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, and former Director Md. Munir Hossain were also present at the meeting.
Mia Md Abu Obaida, First Secretary (Customs Export & Bond) of NBR, and Md. Zakir Hossain, Additional Commissioner of Customs Bond Commissionerate was also present at the meeting.
The BGMEA leaders said that it is imperative to remove various customs and bond- related difficulties for the garment exporters to remain competitive in the global market and capture new opportunities.
They requested the NBR to take necessary measures for addressing the issues like adding new raw materials and other related materials with their harmonised system (HS) code in the bond licences.
Both policies and procedures should be revised and updated in accordance with the market demand and time to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive even in difficult situations, Mr Hassan said.
He also expressed his optimism that the support and cooperation of NBR would continue for the RMG industry in the coming days to pave its way toward prosperity.
The NBR member assured the BGMEA of taking measures to address the problems raised in the meeting.
