Products' standards linked to export growth

Proper standardisation and certification of different products made the country is vital for broadening the country's footprint in international market, speakers said at a programme on Sunday.

They also said the country should improve its logistics sector, enhance the capacity further and establish more facilities to ensure standardisation and certification process.

They made the observations at a discussion programme organised by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) at its headquarters in the city's Tejgaon area to observe the World Standards Day.

Countries across the globe celebrate the international day on October 14. This year the theme of the day was "Shared vision for a better world - Standards for SDGs".

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun joined the programme virtually as the chief guest, while BSTI Director General (DG) Zanendra Nath Sarker presided over the function.

State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Mojumder, Secretary Zakia Sultana, President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries Md. Jashim Uddin spoke on the occasion as special guests.

In his speech, Mr Mahmud Humayun said the country's proper branding was important for achieving its economic goals.

"We need to enhance our standard and certification of the products to reap the benefit from a huge free market economy," he said.

He also said Bangladesh might also benefit from Halal certification issued by the BSTI, as there is huge demand for halal products.

Assuring the international buyers of the quality of made-in-Bangladesh products, he said their certification is needed much for the country's export diversification that largely depends on apparel sector, he added.

Ms Zakia Sultana highlighted various programmes of the BSTI.

BSTI has made standard certification of 229 products for the sake of consumers, she said adding that it also introduced QR code to prevent unscrupulous use of its logo.

FBCCI President said Jashim Uddin the local manufacturers, who export goods from Bangladesh, must maintain quality and standard.

"If we can ensure quality of products for international market, why can't we ensure the same for local buyers?" he said.

Mr Jashim Uddin underscored the need for establishing more laboratory facilities of the BSTI across the country to facilitate the testing and certification process.
