Production of carp hatchlings rises in 2017

Production of carp hatchlings witnessed a rise in 2017 compared to that a year before, according to official data.

5,067 kilograms of carp hatchlings were produced in 2017 while it was 4,819 kilograms in 2016, as per the data provided by the Department of Fisheries (DOF).

The DOF data also showed that the production of carp hatchlings declined drastically in 2014. It stood at 2,695 kg that year.

In 2015, it again increased to 4,412 kg.

The production of carp hatchlings was 4,370 kg in 2011, it revealed.

During the 60’s and early 70’s, aquaculture activities included mainly rearing of natural carp hatchlings collected from the river Jamuna, Padma, Boral, Old Brahmaputra and fertilised eggs from the river Halda of Chattagram district.

Availability of hatchlings from natural sources is declining due to widespread destruction of habitat and changes in ecological system.
