Prices of almost all daily essentials, including vegetables and onion, have remained the same, especially in the capital’s kitchen markets on Thursday, with no letup in fixed-income people’s woes.
Prices of three important spices -- onion, ginger and garlic -- continued to stay stable.
On the other hand, prices of eggs and chicken varieties -- broiler, Sonali and Pakistani -- remained steady.
The state-run Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) in its daily report on Thursday stated that the prices of eggs, local sugar, salt (packed), lentil, onion and flour (packed) are Tk 36-Tk 37 (four pieces), Tk 78-Tk 80 per kg, Tk 27-Tk 32 per kg, Tk 105-Tk 111 per kg, Tk 53-Tk 56 per kg and Tk 36-Tk 38 per kg respectively.
Apart from this, DAM also reported that tomatoes (mature) are being sold at Tk 99-Tk 113 per kg, while broiler chickens at Tk 146-Tk 152 a kg, soybean oil at Tk 142-Tk 143 per litre, garlic (local) at Tk 46-Tk 56 per kg, garlic (imported) at Tk 113-Tk 121 per kg, ginger (local) at Tk 77-Tk 86 per kg and ginger (imported) at Tk 92-Tk 104 per kg.
After visiting some city kitchen markets, it was found that prices of potatoes and other different essential spices were stable compared to the last couple of days.
Commenting on the situation, Maksedul, a vegetable vendor at the city’s Adabor Bazar, told The Financial Express (FE) that prices of almost all the vegetables are stable, maintaining the previous hike.
He is retailing the brinjal at Tk 70-Tk 80 per kg.
The vegetable vendor said he has bought five kg of bitter gourd at Tk 350 and now he is selling it at Tk 80 per kg.
Maksedul is selling pumpkin (winter) at Tk 55-Tk 60 each. Asked about the retail prices of beans, cabbage and local cucumber, Maksedul said he is selling them at Tk 80-Tk 90, Tk 30-40 and Tk 50 per kg respectively.
Some other vegetable vendors at Adabor, Mohammadpur Krishi Market along with mobile vendors also echoed the same price level.
Both traders and vendors blamed the soaring prices triggered as a consequence of the last month's flood situations in different parts of the country along the Covid-19 pandemic.
They pointed out that the supply constraints and spiralling prices in the international commodity market have also triggered the unstable situation in the local market.
Akash, a wholesaler, said the prices of three important spices -- onion, garlic and ginger remained stable in the city’s wholesale market.
The prices of different varieties of onion including local are ranging between Tk 42 and Tk 58 per kg in the wholesale market while ginger (imported) and local garlic are selling at Tk 95-100 and Tk 50-60 per kg respectively.
Apart from this, prices of garlic at wholesale markets remained ranging between Tk 45-Tk 100 per kg, he said.
He is making profit selling onion at retail level from the wholesale prices at Tk 2.0-Tk 3.0 per kg while garlic and ginger ranging from Tk 5.0-Tk 10 per kg.
Rasel, a salesman at New Bismillah Broiler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, told The FE that he is selling broiler chickens at Tk 150-Tk 160 a kg.
Sonali and Pakistani chicken are selling at Tk 270-Tk 290 per kg each on the day, he said, adding that a dozen of red eggs are selling at Tk 110.
