The prices of potato have shot up to Tk 50-55 a kg, adding woes to the consumers who are battered with rocketing trend of other essentials.
Stored potato of diamond and cardinal varieties were sold at Tk 50 a kg while 'carriage' variety at Tk 55 a kg on Monday at the city kitchen markets and groceries.
Different varieties of potato were selling Tk 40-45 a kg three days back, according to kitchen market sources.
Trading Corporation of Bangladesh recorded a 20 per cent hike in potato prices on an average in last one week.
And the current price of potato is 100 per cent higher than that of a year ago, said TCB.
Traders said fall in production as well as existing higher costs of vegetables fuelled up the demand causing surge in potato prices.
Market observers, however, put emphasis on monitoring cold storages at the key hubs in regular basis to keep prices within reach of commoners.
