Performance culture, accountability factors

The country's top CEOs and human resources high-ups on Monday said building a performance-oriented culture, ensuring top-down transparency and accountability, and reviews and feedbacks are some of the key factors behind the successful operations of a company.

They said only money cannot motivate most of the people. Rather, giving purpose for good performance, other than financial benefits, work well in any organisation.

They also identified providing rewards for good performance and taking regular feedback from staffs enable employees to get used to a performance-based culture.

They were speaking at a daylong talk on 'Building a Performance Oriented Culture' at a city hotel.

Cerebrus, a Mumbai-based consultant firm, and Marico Bangladesh jointly organised the programme.

Speaking as the keynote speaker, Grameenphone (GP) CEO Michael Foley said in a transparent organisation, employees from top to bottom talk in the same language.

It always shows the strength and transparency of a company, he also said.

Holding regular discussion and taking feedback, rather than fixing long-term target, ensure better performance, he added.

Partex Star Group CEO Q M Shahed said picking an employee in a good work and reward him for good performance work better than catching one in wrong work and punish him for it.

He said educating and empowering line managers and making them accountable bring good results for a company.

IDLC Finance CEO Arif Khan said one of the main jobs of a CEO is convincing the company's board members not to intervene in management affairs, and it always brings good results.

No intervention from board members has made IDLC a successful company, he opined.

He also said no single size fits for all HR practices. There are customised practices for certain companies based on their type and services.

Shohoz.com managing director Maliha M Quadir said the first problem that a start-up company like shohoz.com faces is attracting talents to the company which is yet to see success.

Creating brand value, showing prospects of bright future to the employees, and make them work for long-term are also among the challenges for such new companies, she noted.

Chief People and Business Performance Officer of Rahimafrooz Arif Shahriar said no person is unfit or bad. But a company must find the right fit for the right position.

He also stressed on the need of classifying employees and treat them accordingly.

Marico Bangladesh MD Ashish Goupal, GP Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) Syed Tanvir Hussain, and Country Head of Human Resources (HOHR) of Standard Chartered Bank Khairun Nahar Haque Urmee, among others, also spoke on the occasion.

Cerebrus founder Anita Ramachandran moderated the programme.
