Spending for outbound travel from the country increased by 32 per cent in the first eight months of the current fiscal year (FY18) over the same period of the last fiscal year.
Latest statistics of the central bank showed that official payments for the outbound travel stood at $411.90 million in July-February period of the current fiscal year while the amount was $311.90 million in the same period of FY17.
The estimation, presented in the services and income account of the country, however, reflects only a partial picture of the spending of the outbound travel by Bangladeshis.
The actual spending is much higher than the amount showed in the official data.
Bangladesh Bank statistics also showed that earnings from inbound travel to the country also increased by 23 per cent during the period under review.
Some $241.90 million came to the country through the travellers from outside in the first eight months which was $196.10 million in the same period of last fiscal.
