The revenue authority has detected a Tk 40.6 million evasion by two organisations--non-government ASA in the city and Map Paper Board Mills Ltd in Jamalpur.
The VAT (West) zone Dhaka served a notice on Sunday to the organisations giving an ultimatum of 15 days to pay the VAT the both allegedly avoided paying along with penalty, according to a zone statement.
The audit team has found ASA, located in the city's Shaymoli area, has a number of transactions where VAT is applicable, but the organisation did not deposit the tax.
Office rent, purchase of furniture and different product and services and maintenance cost are business operations subject to VAT payment.
The team has conducted audit of the last three years-from January 2015 to July 2017-18 of ASA.
According to the audit report, the NGO evaded Tk 12 million VAT. According to the VAT law, section 37, the VAT officials imposed a 2.0 per cent penalty of Tk 5.5 million on the company.
The company will have to pay a total of Tk 17.7 million VAT including the penalty.
Besides, VAT team of the zone confiscated the commercial documents of the Map Paper Mills under the section 26 of the VAT law following allegation of VAT evasion.
VAT officials scrutinised the documents and found the company produces medium paper board for carton.
From July 2017 to November 2017, the company did not mention the actual accounts in its VAT register.
VAT officials have found a mismatch of about 6,023,620 kilogramme products, amounting to Tk 120.4 million, between VAT register and commercial register of the company.
The VAT officials estimated Tk 18.0 million VAT evasion by the company through the mismatch.
Additional penalty at a rate of 2.0 per cent or Tk 4.8 million will be collected from the company. The company owes Tk 22.9 million VAT to the government.
