The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will honour a total of 144 businesses across the country for depositing the highest amount of Value Added Tax (VAT) with the public exchequer in fiscal year (FY) 2016-17.
Of them, nine top VAT-payers will receive national-level award while 135 others will be honoured at district level.
The VAT wing of the board issued two separate gazette notifications on November 28 with the names of the businesses.
The NBR will hand over the awards on the occasion of National VAT Day that falls on December 10.
Of the national-level top VAT payers, Titas gas field, Habiganj gas field and Srikail gas field (Bapex) will receive the award in production category.
In service category, Orion Infrastructure Limited, TUV SUD Bangladesh Private Limited and Somoy Media Limited have been selected for the award.
Under business category, SC Jonson (pvt) Limited, Wartsila Bangladesh Limited and KCJ and Associates Limited will receive the award.
Talking to the FE, a senior VAT official said the board has to trim down the list of VAT awardees following the objections raised by the income tax, customs and Bangladesh Bank (BB).
"Initially, we had prepared a list of around 500 businesses for the award. Of them, income tax wing reported against some 200 businesses due to unpaid taxes," he said.
Also, the VAT authority could not nominate some of the highest VAT-paying businesses due to legal disputes, he added.
Last year, some 149 top VAT-paying businesses were honoured by NBR.
