NBR team finds VAT evasion by Lakeshore Hotel

A VAT intelligence team raided the Lakeshore Hotel in the capital on Tuesday for alleged VAT evasion through non-submission of returns as per law.

The team also seized 349 bottles of liquor from the hotel, as its authorities failed to provide any legal documents against those, said a press statement.

The team of VAT Audit Intelligence and Investigation Directorate of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) found that the hotel has been refraining from submission of VAT returns as well as payment of VAT since January 2020.

As per the VAT and Supplementary Duty Act 2012, all VAT-registered businesses have to submit their returns by 15th of every month.

The intelligence team found evidences of VAT evasion through seizing documents related to sales of residential services.

The team crosschecked information in the documents with the hotel's VAT returns submitted in 2019.

Deputy director of the directorate Nazmunnahar Kaisar led the intelligence team.

The team found that the hotel authorities concealed sales information to evade VAT. They collected VAT from the consumers, but did not deposit it to the public exchequer.
