The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched a higher audit training programme for income tax officials to enhance their capacity in auditing complex tax returns of large corporate taxpayers.
The European Union (EU) is funding the six-day training programme, launched on Sunday at BCS Tax Academy, Dhaka.
At the inauguration ceremony, NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem said efficiency of the tax administration depends on strong management capacity.
"The NBR has made significant development in revenue collection. To continue the growth, the board will have to focus on internal capacity building."
Recently, audit of tax files played an effective role in increasing revenue collection. Audit training became imperative to reap maximum benefit from limited resources, he added.
NBR Member Shaheen Akhter said the training programme would help to enhance the taxmen's capacity to audit using digital technology in a sustainable manner.
NBR Member Jahid Hassan said this training programme would help the officials to conduct financial audit in computerised accounting environment, and some selective audits, such as tax, banking and insurance, and telecommunication audits.
EU Representative Jurate Smalskyte said modernisation of the tax administration has been expedited, and the training programme would help to make the tax system paperless and build an efficient tax system.
A total of 40 tax officials received the training. Second phase of the programme may start in January 2023.
