The National Board of Revenue (NBR) observed 'Halkhata' on Sunday to build friendly relations with taxpayers and encourage them to pay tax properly, reports BSS.
State minister for public administration Ismat Ara Sadek inaugurated the 'Halkhata and Baishakh Utsab' at tax zone-4.
Earlier, NBR Chairman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan also attended 'Halkhata and Baishakh Utsab' programme at the conference room of Tax Zone-8 at Segunbagicha in Dhaka.
Ismat Ara Sadek said there was fear among people about income tax in the past but people are now paying income tax without any fear because the NBR has been able to build a friendly relation with taxpayers and ease the tax payment system.
NBR Chairman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said 'Halkhata' has built a bridge between NBR and taxpayers. The NBR will honor the taxpayers who will pay tax properly, he added.
He said businesses get expanded if tax is paid properly. He asked the NBR officials not to harass any taxpayer, saying that strong action will be taken against those who will harass taxpayers.
After the inaugural ceremony, the NBR chairman visited tax zones 3,5,6 and 12 and exchanged views with taxpayers. Later, he joined a cultural function.
All income tax, VAT and customs offices were decorated with traditional decoration pieces such as colourful mud pots, masks and banana tree.
NBR officials-employees welcomed the guests at their respective offices and entertain them. NBR gave books as gifts to the taxpayers.
