NBR asks banks to freeze Robi accounts

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Monday asked commercial banks to freeze bank accounts of telecom operator Robi Axiata for next three days alleging evasion of Tk 187 million VAT and SD.

The Large Taxpayers Unit (LTU) under the Value Added Tax (VAT) wing of the revenue board sent letters with the instruction of all commercial banks to suspend withdrawal and depositing of money from all of the bank accounts of the company.

LTU commissioner Md Matiur Rahman sent the letters in this regards to the commercial banks.

As per existing law, commercial banks are bound to freeze bank accounts of its clients with the instruction of the NBR.

All of the bank accounts of the telecom operators across the country have been frozen Monday following the NBR’s directives, banking sources said.

The LTU has claimed the VAT on account of unpaid SD as per trial balance worth Tk 100 million, VAT on space and establishment rent worth Tk 67 million, SIM (subscriber identity module) tax Tk 8.1 million and VAT on inter-connection service charge of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL) Tk 8.1 million.
