Most factories paid salary and allowances, claims BGMEA

Almost all the garment factories have paid wages for the month of July and festival allowances to their workers, claimed BGMEA on Monday.

Most of the factories have paid partial payment of 10 to 15 days for the month of August as well.

Moinuddin Ahmed, first vice president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) asserted it at a press conference at its headquarters in the city.

"We have been closely monitoring some 700 garment factories identified by different agencies as vulnerable to labour unrest over wage payment," he told the press conference.

The BGMEA formed 15 monitoring committees which closely supervised the vulnerable factories for one month, he said.

The trade body lobbied with the banks for obtaining emergency fund for 21 factories which were identified as most vulnerable over payment of wages and festival allowances.

"Not a single factory is left where payment of wages and allowance issues were not solved," the BGMEA leader said.

He said some factories had been facing problems over demands including advance partial payment for the month of August and leave ahead of Eid.

There was no legal obligation over advance payment and holidays, he explained.

The complains about delay of wages and festival allowances came from the factories where trade union exists even though all dues regarding payment were cleared, he said.

Mr Ahmed said 90 per cent of the factories were closed by Sunday and the rest announced Eid holidays on Monday.

He also requested the government to step up vigilance so that vehicles cannot carry passengers beyond their capacity.
