More Hilsha export to India allowed

The government has allowed the export of 500 more tonnes of Hilsa fish to India ahead of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community.

The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) gave a special permission in this regard on Wednesday. Each of the local trading firms, which received the non-transferable permission, will be able to ship 50 tonnes of the popular fish.

The permission will remain effective until September 30, 2022.

Earlier on September 04 last, the government had allowed the export of 2450 tonnes of such fish to the neighbouring country.

However, the traders will have to follow the country's Export Policy 2021-24 while physical examinations must be completed by the customs authorities concerned. Under the previous permission for exporting 2450 tonnes, the traders have so far been able to export more or less 100 tonnes, said a source.

Meanwhile, a legal notice has been served to the authorities concerned, challenging the government decision and seeking necessary steps to permanently prohibit exporting the fish to India within seven days from the date of receiving the notice.

Md Mahmudul Islam, a Supreme Court lawyer, sent the notice on September 11 last.
