Mobile phone operators will compensate three pulses each 30-second talktime for first and second on-net call drops to mobile users.

According to a new guideline revealed at a press conference on Monday, there will be four pulses each 40 seconds for third to seventh drops.

Mobile subscribers can use the compensation from the first call the next day.

Cellular operators can return compensation talktime on the day of call drops as well.

But they must inform their customers of the compensation through an SMS.

The new guideline will be effective from October 01.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRC) organised the briefing at headquarters in Dhaka city to make the new guideline public.

Earlier, operators would not compensate for the first call drop. Call usually drops in the first call.

The customers who made multiple call drops a day used to get the compensation, but that too counted from the second one and onwards.

At the programme, post and telecoms minister Mustafa Jabbar said the incidence of one call drop (a day) is the highest in Bangladesh.

"So, the customers deserve to get their money back," he observed.

The minister suggested that mobile operators invest more to address the call drop issue so they need not pay more compensation.

Telecoms secretary Khalilur Rahman, BTRC chairman Shyam Sunder Shikdar and vice-chairman Subrata Roy Maitra, among others, also spoke at the event.
