Mango production sees drop in 2017

Annual mango production in the country is estimated to have dropped in the just-concluded calendar year.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations made the projection recently.

It forecast that mango production in Bangladesh would stand at 1.156 million tonnes in 2017 while the estimated production of mango was 1.162 million tonnes in 2016.

FAO report also showed that average growth rate of mango production in the country had been 3.76 per cent until 2007 from 2016.

Bangladesh, according to the UN agency estimate, is the eighth largest mango producer of the world.

It also projected that India, the largest mango growing country, produced 18.54 million tonnes of mango in the past year.

China is the second largest followed by Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan and Egypt. Around 72 per cent of the global mango production takes place in Asia.

FAO estimated that in 2017 global mango production reached 47.13 million tonnes.
