Layer chickens, local lentils become costlier in Dhaka kitchen markets

Layer chickens and local lentils have become costlier in Dhaka city’s kitchen markets, adding woes to common people.

Prices of red eggs, and Pakistani and Sonali chickens remained static maintaining the previous hike.

However, prices of almost all the daily essentials are still high, according to traders and consumers.

Stakeholders said prices of many other essentials remained steady in most cases.

Layer chicken was selling at Tk 220 per kg on Thursday, which was Tk 210 a couple of days ago, Rasel (single name), a salesman at New Bismillah Broiler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, told The Financial Express (FE).

Broiler chicken was selling at Tk 170 a kg at the wholesale level on Thursday while the price of red egg was Tk 100 a dozen at wholesale level, he stated.

Jubayer Hossain, a wholesaler at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, told the FE that the price of local lentils increased further by Tk 5.0 per kg at the retail level. The item was retailing by him at Tk 110 per kg which was Tk 105 a couple of days.

Jubayer said the prices of flour, edible oil, sugar and imported lentils remained high.

Akash (single name), a vendor at Mohammadpur Krishi Market, said newly-harvested onions were selling at Tk 36-Tk 37 per kg at the wholesale level today (Thursday). Imported Indian onions were selling at Tk 45-Tk 46 per kg at wholesale level. The wholesale price of imported garlic was Tk 115. Imported ginger was selling at Tk 108 a kg at the wholesale level.

Items such as flour, edible oil and sugar witnessed no remarkable change, meaning that the previous higher level of prices continued on Thursday.

This correspondent was also told that prices of brinjals, pumpkins, bitter gourd, pointed gourd, newly harvested potatoes and green chilli remained steady in the past few days.

A vegetable vendor, Faruk (single name), claimed that the prices of almost all vegetables remained unchanged on Thursday.

The wholesale prices of cauliflowers and beans were Tk 25 and Tk 30-Tk 35 respectively on Thursday. The new variety of potato was selling at Tk 16-Tk 17 a kg at the wholesale level while the red tomato at Tk 40-Tk 50 in retail level, he added.
