The Khirsapat mango of Chapainawabganj in the country has formally got the Geographical Indication (GI) mark on Sunday.
Khirsapat, one of the most popular varieties of mango, has become the third product of Bangladesh to secure GI registration followed by Jamdani sari and Hilsa fish.
A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on product which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin.
Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Sunday formally handed over the GI certificate to the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) director (horticulture research centre) Dr Madan Gopal Saha at a ceremony organised by Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT).
The state-run BARI applied for such certification for the mango variety in February last on behalf of the growers of Chapainawabganj, the key mango-producing hub in the country.
The minister also urged the DPDT to complete the process of GI certification of another two mango varieties — Lengra and Aswina.
State ministry to the industry, Kamal Ahmed Majumder also spoke while acting industry secretary Md Abdul Halim chaired the handover ceremony.
DPDT director Sanowar Hossain coordinated the entire programme.
Sanowar Hossain said another 29 produce and products of the country remain in the pipeline for GI certification.
