Onshore Kailashtila gas field started supplying around 19 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) to the country's national gas grid from Saturday night.
The new gas source was found following workover on Kailashtila-7 well by state-run oil and gas exploration company Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX) last week.
State-owned Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) had hired BAPEX to carry out the workover to increase Kailashtila gas field's overall natural gas output.
With the new supply, Kailashtila field's overall gas output has increased to around 48 mmcfd from previous 29 mmcfd, said a senior official of SGFL.
Kailashtila-7 well was declared abandoned in 2017.
Kailashtila gas field was discovered in 1962 and production was initiated in 1983.
Sources said a couple of months back BAPEX discovered another new gas zone in currently operational Salda gas field in Brahmanbaria.
BAPEX discovered the new gas zone after drilling a workover cum additional drilling of-Salda 2 - well, which will ramp up Salda gas field's overall output three-fold to around 7.50 mmcfd, said sources.
Currently, two operational gas wells at Salda gas field- Salda-3 and Salda-4 - are producing around 2.5 mmcfd of gas in total.
Bangladesh is set to get the new gas, around 5.0 mmcfd, connected to the national gas grid within next couple of weeks.
Country's overall natural gas output is currently hovering around 2,800 mmcfd including re-gasified imported LNG of around 800 mmcfd as on May 8, 2022.
