Japan has handed over commemorative coins to Bangladesh Bank (BB), marking the 50th anniversary of establishment of its diplomatic relations with Bangladesh.
Japan recognised Bangladesh as a sovereign country on February 10 in 1972, and the year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
While visiting the central bank of Bangladesh, Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh ITO Naoki handed over the coins to Governor Fazle Kabir, said a press release issued here on Thursday.
Under the Japan Mint and Bangladesh Bank cooperation, 13,000 pieces of 50 Taka denominated commemorative silver coins were minted and 3,000 coins were delivered to Bangladesh. The coins are round-shaped and 35 mm in diameter, weighing 20 grams.
The front side of the coin is inscribed with the '50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan-Bangladesh Diplomatic Relations' logo, Cherry Blossom (National Flower of Japan) and Water Lily (National Flower of Bangladesh) using color printing technology.
Bangladesh's Liberation War Monument National Martyr's Memorial is designed on the backside.
The ambassador said the coins designed with Cherry Blossoms and Water Lily symbolize long-lasting friendship with Bangladesh.
The coins are being sold at Bangladesh Bank's Motijheel Office and Taka Museum, Mirpur from Thursday.
