Asia-Pacific countries like Japan and Hong Kong can be lucrative job markets for Bangladeshi female workers, said a survey conducted by a United Nations body.

A total of 1,153 Bangladeshi workers went to Japan with jobs last year but of them, only 23 were women, said the report titled 'diversity and challenges for women migrant workers in Bangladesh'.

The Bangladesh chapter of UN Women released the report on Thursday.

It said the countries like Japan have demand for both skilled and low-skilled women.

In the skilled category, information technology (IT) has good demand for women workers and in low-skilled category, care-giving sector, beauty parlour, and shops have openings for women workers in Japan.

It also suggested that with proper training, a large number of women workers from Bangladesh can take the opportunity to migrate to Japan for employment.

Similarly, the countries like Hong Kong and Singapore can be a good destination for Bangladeshi women workers, it said.

But the report noted that in Bangladesh, pre-departure training for women workers needs to be strengthened as this service is not available in all the districts.

Most of such training centres don't have counselling services and sufficient skilled trainers.

The survey recommended better coordination between the offices of the deputy commissioners and local government representatives to enhance quality training for women migrant workers.
