Italian company to invest in recycling solid waste of tannery

An Italian company has expressed interest to invest in recycling the solid waste of the Tannery Industrial Estate at Savar, a senior official said on Sunday.

As per an initial discussion, the company would produce fertiliser from the waste and sell those in the European market, said Md Mostaque Hasan, chairman of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC).

"We are now preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and would soon conduct a feasibility study," he told reporters, following a meeting with Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Enrico Nunziata at the BSCIC headquarters in the city.

The BSCIC chairman also said that the proposed investment is expected to bring in green technology in the country's leather sector and help manage the solid waste that is causing harm to the environment.

Representatives from the Italian venture have stressed the need for ensuring uninterrupted supply of solid waste to the plant when it will come into operation, the BSCIC chairman said.

He expected that the proposed plant would come into operation within a year.

Ambassador Enrico said Italy will explore the opportunity to transfer green technology through joint collaboration between the two countries.

Additional Secretary of the Industries Ministry (BSCIC, SME & BITAC) Kazi Sakhawat Hossain, BSCIC Board members and senior officials were also present at the meeting.
