Nasrul Hamid

State minister for power, energy and mineral resources says an increased regional and international cooperation can boost expansion of renewable energy and the use of clean energy.

The latest technology should be disseminated to mitigate the limitations of large land in order to implement solar power projects, Nasrul Hamid cited.

He was addressing the first Asia Green Growth Partnership Ministerial Meeting virtually on Monday.

Mr Hamid recognises the necessity of sustainable energy management for the expanded use of renewable energy.

Bangladesh has adopted a year-based plan for implementation of the renewable energy policy, he says.

Some 20-million people of the rural Bangladesh have come under electricity coverage through 6.0-million solar home systems, according to the junior minister.

Bangladesh is implementing five separate wind energy projects to generate an estimated 245 megawatt (MW) of power and a waste energy project to produce 50 MW.

Besides, efforts are well under way to import hydropower from neighbouring Nepal and Bhutan.

Mr Hamid says his government is revisiting the power system master plan to accommodate more renewable and clean energy projects in future.

Japanese economic, commercial and industries minister Horoshi Kajiyama chaired the meeting.

Saudi energy minister Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, UAE commerce and technology minister Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Indonesian energy and mineral resources minister Arifin Tasrif, and International Energy Agency executive director Dr Fatih Baril, among others, also spoke.
