IBC leader Salauddin Shapon resigns from tripartite committee

The Secretary General of the IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC) Salauddin Shapon has resigned from the tripartite committee to review labour rules.

Labour and employment ministry has formed the tripartite committee of the country’s readymade garment sector in 2019 incorporating two workers’ representatives—IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC) and Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SKOP) along with other representatives from the government and owners.

The IBC secretary general resigned alleging that he was not invited in the last three meetings while another meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow (Tuesday). The committee also did not invite him for the next meeting.

“The last meetings were important as they were scheduled to finalise the proposed recommendations through discussions,” he said at a press conference held on Monday at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

It is not acceptable to exclude the workers’ representative from the review committee from the largest foreign currency earning RMG sector, he noted citing the reason for his resignation.

IBC leaders at the conference expressed grave concern over the government’s hurriedness in reviewing the labour rules.

Due to the rush, no workers should deprive of their legitimate and internationally recognised rights, they said adding that they are expecting neutral role of the government in reviewing the rules.

“But it is absent in the present activities of the government,” they alleged.

IBC president Badruddoza Nijam and general secretary Kamrul Hasan, among others, were present at the conference.
