The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has amended the definition of CKD motorcycles to ease the import process of hi-tech bikes.
Customs wing of the board has issued an order, dated January 28, 2021, in this regard.
Officials said the order was issued due to difficulties faced by the importers of completely knocked down (CKD) hi- tech motorcycles.
The amendments were made as the previous definition, framed in 1997, did not cover the technological advancement of the CKD motorcycles.
Bangladesh Motorcycle Assemblers and Manufacturers Association (BMAMA) had also demanded the amendments as the customs was not releasing the imported CKD bikes for lack of clear definition about the technologically advanced bikes.
On January 1 last, the revenue board in a meeting with the industries ministry, BMAMA and ACI Motors Ltd. took the decision to update the definition.
According to the new definition, importers will be allowed to import CKD motorcycles assembled with inlet pipe or related parts for electronic fuel injection (EFI) or fuel injection (FI) model.
In general, main frame body, front fork, rear fork, handle, brake cable and switches, tyre, tube, rim, bulb, spoke, brake panel, rear shock absorber, chain and chain cover, front and rear axle, speedometer assembly, side cover, seat cover, ignition coil, rectifier light, battery and required nuts and bolts, and accessories required for assembling should remain disassembled.
However, the NBR will also allow import of assembled front fork for motorcycles with front shock absorber mechanism in case of importing hi-tech motorcycles.
EFI/FI model motorcycles with assembled switch, hose, brake cable, HU unit, brake caliper and grip will also be considered as CKD.
For tubeless wheel, importers will be able to import motorcycles with assembled tyre, nipple, rim, hub and disk, according to the order.
