The government has decided to import 100,000 tonnes of coal to meet emergency needs of Barapukuria coal-based power plant.
State minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid revealed the decision while talking to the reporters at secretariat on Sunday, report local news agencies.
Nasrul said the authorities already completed the tender process to import the coal to build-up the stock and the coal will be used for emergency needs, not for regular production.
Recently, the power generation at the power plant was suspended due to shortage of coal supply from the adjacent coal mine as approximately 142,000 tonnes of coal disappeared.
The coal mine authority filed a case against the suspected persons over the matter. Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating the matter.
When asked about the disappearance of coal, Nasrul said the government is strict about any sort of corruption.
"Several bodies are investigating the matter and quick actions will be taken as per reports," he added.
