The government's mobile sale of beef, mutton, broiler chicken, milk and eggs at subsidised rates for mass people, kicked off in the city on Sunday, aiming to give commoners a relief during this Ramadan.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim inaugurated the sale through a programme organised by the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) on its premises in the city.
The pickup van sale began at 10 points in the city where beef was selling at Tk 550 a kg, khasi (meat of castrated male goat) Tk 800 a kg, dressed broiler Tk 200 a kg, milk Tk 60 a litre, and eggs Tk 30 per four pieces (Tk 90 a dozen).
Beef is being sold at Tk 660-720 a kg, khasi Tk 950-1,000, milk Tk 70-75 a litre and eggs at Tk 34-36 per four pieces in the mainstream markets.
The DLS mobile sale of these food items will continue till the 28th Ramadan.
Every person is allowed to buy one kg of beef, one kg of khasi, two litres of milk, one kg of broiler and one dozen of eggs.
Every pickup van will sell a total of 200 kgs of beef, 200 kgs of khasi, 25,000 pieces of eggs, 50 kgs of dressed broiler and 500 litres of milk.
The mobile sale service is available at Abdul Gani Road adjacent to the secretariat, Khamarbari intersection, Japan Garden City, Mirpur 60 feet road, Azimpur Matrisadan, Noyabazar in old town, Arambagh, Notun Bazar, Kalshi in Mirpur, and Jatrabari.
The Livestock and Dairy Development Project under the DLS is providing overall assistance in the sales activities, while Bangladesh Dairy Farmers' Association (BDFA) and Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) are involved in the supply side.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Dr Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury spoke at the inaugural event presided over by DLS Director General Dr Manzoor Mohammad Shahzada.
Director of the Livestock and Dairy Development Project under DLS Abdur Rahim, President of Bangladesh Dairy Farmers' Association Mohammad Imran Hossain, President of Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council Moshiur Rahman, among others, also spoke at the ceremony.
